Ordinary calls

An ordinary bid is a commitment

Start by understanding the unit you are naming.

Read the call literally

A bid states an expected number of tricks, not a card-point total. In the partnership model described by Pagat, partners’ ordinary bids combine into the team contract.

Use an original practice log

Before an open-hand demonstration, write your proposed call and one sentence explaining it. Afterward, record what you missed. Separate a rules misunderstanding from a mistaken prediction: they need different kinds of practice.

Avoid hindsight-only lessons

A result does not prove that every earlier choice was sound. Compare the explanation with what was visible at the time, and keep the discussion focused on legal options and the chosen rules.

Table communication

Ask which bidding procedure applies before using any partnership discussion. A tutorial exercise is not permission to reveal card information during a competitive hand.
